FAQs

Frequently Aksed Questions

Most projects move through phases such as programming, schematic design, design development, construction documentation, procurement, and installation.
These stages translate concepts into detailed drawings, specifications, and 3D visuals so contractors and vendors can execute accurately

NCIDQ clarifies that interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design, and designers apply creative and technical solutions within a building.
Designers are trained to plan space, coordinate with building systems, and follow codes, whereas decorators focus on aesthetics and furnishings.

Common pricing models include hourly fees around 100–200+ USD, flat-fee packages, per-square-foot pricing, and markups/commissions of roughly 10–40% on purchases.
Some firms also charge a percentage of the total project cost (often about 10–20%), and actual rates vary by scope, location, and experience

Design development alone often requires about 6–12 weeks, depending on scope and revision cycles.
Procurement can add 8–16+ weeks because furniture and custom items have significant lead times, so full projects frequently span multiple months

Permits are typically required for structural work and for changes to major systems like plumbing and electrical, which are obtained through the local building department.
Purely cosmetic updates usually do not require permits, but rules vary by municipality and project cost thresholds, so local verification is essential

Selecting low‑VOC or zero‑VOC paints and finishes helps reduce indoor pollutants, which often measure higher indoors than outdoors.
Specifying GREENGUARD‑certified furniture and materials can further limit chemical emissions to support healthier indoor air
